Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Little Miss Sunshine is directed by Valerie Faris and her husband Jonathan Dayton.

Plot: The main character, Olive, is going to participate in beauty contest. Her father (Richard), mother (Sheryl), brother (Dwayne), uncle (Frank) and grandfather (Edwin) are all going to the beauty contest in California with her. They drive a van along the highway. During the long journey, something happens…

Father: Richard gets bad News from his boss. His nice steps of how to become a winner is not used by his boss because few people believe that. He hates losers and people should never give up in order to become a winner!!Thus, that is a shocking News to him!!

 Brother: When Dwayne knows that he is actually colorblind, he is very upset. He has not talked for NINE MONTHS becausehe wants his parents to allow him to go to flight school. He starts to talk again after he realizes that his dream would never come true.

Grandfather: Edwin is a drug user. He died after the day the family stayed in a motel.

*Olive has practiced very hard for the beauty contest, did she win?

No, her sexy dancing drove Judges crazy!!They want Olive to get out of here!!Her family supports her and they all go dancing with her!!Though Olive is not allowed to join this contest anymore, she enjoyed the moment dancing with her family. She dedicated the performance to her grandfather since he taught her how to dance.

*How do you define a loser and a winner?

I think if you are always afraid of doing something new and never want to try, then you are a loser. A winner is someone who never gives up and he/she doesn’t care about the results. They enjoy the process!!

*Is Olive a loser?

No, she is definitely not a loser. She is willing to try and continue her performance. She does not care whether she will fail or win. Also, she helps her family members’ relationships become better. During the trip, her father and mother quarreled a lot. Her brother is devastated about the truth that he cannot be a pilot. Uncle Frank is a gay. He felt very sad when he saw his ex with another guy.The saddest thing for the whole family members is grandfather’s death. Olive has a power to cheer them up and they all seem to forget all the sorrow in the end!!I would say she is a winner for her courage and warmth!!

*Richard told Olive that skinny is the beauty standard, do you agree?

I don’t think males have any right to tell females what beauty is.They always judge what girls’ figure should look like. Beauty really depends on the eyes of the beholders!!I don’t think girls should go on a diet by eating very little food. That is very unhealthy!!You might have anorexia later on. No matter what your body looks like, there is always someone who will love you.

Riding in Car with Boys 2001

‘’Riding in cars with Boys’’ is directed by Penny Marshall and is talking about an important issue in America in the 60s and 70s- teenagers got pregnant.

Film title: This film is the main character, Beverly’s biography and the film title is the same as her book, which is mainly about her life. The fifth words of the title, boys, means that Beverly has to deal with many males-her father, husband (Ray) and her son (Jason).

Story: Beverly slept with Ray and got pregnant. She then married Ray and gave birth to a boy, Jason! She had to study while taking care of her son.

Do you think Beverly has already got ready to be a young mother? No, she still had her dream which is to study in university and she didn’t want to give up!!Also, she didn’t even change Jason’s diaper and kept saying that Jason annoyed her.

Quote from Beverly in the film:’’One day can change your life. One day can ruin your life. All life is four or five big days that change everything.’’Do you agree with that?

I agree with her. The day she met Ray changed her whole life. If she hadn’t slept with Ray, she could have studied in university and probably be a famous writer. (Because she is very smart!!)In our life, there are things that you didn’t mean to do or say, yet there is no way to restore them as saying sorry is useless. Sometimes you will have to accept your destiny and move on. When you look back, you might laugh at what you’ve done before!!

Beverly said’ ‘I didn’t have a boy. I had a girl.’’ Does this affect her love for Jason? She felt disappointed when she found out she had a boy. That’s because her best friend, Fay, got pregnant also and she wanted their children to be girls and grow up just like them, like good sisters!!Beverly didn’t really know whether she loves Jason or she has to love him. I think she did love Jason, no matter how his birth ruined her dream that is, studying in university. She was not sure about her love for Jason for she loved him too much that she couldn’t actually feel her maternal love!!

Do you consider Beverly a good mother? I don’t think she is a good mother. She left Jason on the seesaw and went to talk with Fay. (She thinks Fay has more important thing to tell her!!)Another time, she asked Jason to leave her alone because she had to talk to Fay!!Unfortunately, Jason was drowned in the pool. Beverly was not attentive and responsible.

Does Beverly make a good decision to ask Ray to stay away? Yes, Ray was addicted to smoking and drinking. If he lived with Beverly and Jason, he would only squander all the money for buying heroin. Jason loved her dad very much and hated Beverly’s decision to force Ray to leave. I think it’s the best solution because you can’t let your child grow up to be a drug user, right?

Jason said ‘‘Everything always happens to her, no one else.’’Do you think Beverly is selfish? In the beginning, Beverly is selfish for she has planed the life for Jason as his birthday gift!!That was unfair to him!!Why can’t he decide what he will do for himself? At the end, Beverly changed since she let Jason transfer to the university he wanted! She set Jason free and he no longer had to be forced to follow Beverly’s dream!!

Boys Don't Cry 1999

 

This film talks about ‘’LESBIAN ’’ issue, which means homosexual women. Boys Don’t Cry is directed by a female director, Kimberly Peirce. Feminist films often are directed by females and they convey some certain issues that are related to women.

 The main character, Brandon, dressed like a boy and regarded herself as a boy. She changed her original name ‘’Teena’’ to ‘’Brandon, ’because that would show her gender. She loved to chase after beautiful girls. In the film; she fell in love with Lana, who accepted John (a criminal) to live with her and her mother. At first, Brandon, John, Tom (John’s friend) Lana and Candace had a good time drinking and smoking together. Unfortunately, John was very angry about Brandon’s relationship with Lana. Later, John was told by Candace that Brandon is actually a girl since she found her real name on fax. John has an unstable personality and he cannot even control his anger. He punched and raped Brandon. Then she ran away from them and was sent to the hospital by Lana. Lana loved Brandon and was ready to elope with her. Unluckily, they were too late to escape, Brandon was ended up killing by crazy John.     

  Both John and Lana’s mother show biases to Brandon. John kills her. Lana’s mom said ‘’I don’t want to let IT in the house’’ instead of ‘’he or ‘’she. ’Certainly, she views Brandon as a strange monster, not a human being at all!!

 Why did John rape Brandon? Because he wants to show his power and threaten her. By raping her, John proves that Brandon is a liar (not a boy) and is inferior to him.   

Brandon suffered from the rape, both mentally and physically. She never had sex before, so she must experience a painful intercourse, especially a force one!!When she was asked by the police about the rape, she was humiliated once again. I remember a word said by the police’’How can he(John) do nothing to you if he knows you are a girl? ‘This word seems very sarcastic for Bradon kept saying John did not rape her.

What about the title? The Title Boys Don’t Cry shows a social stereotype. The reason is because people always ask boys do not cry in front of others. Boys should be strong. If they cry, they are just like girls being weak!!I think the special meaning for the title is that Brandon is actually a girl, but she did not cry or run away. This demonstrates that girls are not always inferior to boys or are defeated easily!!

This film is based on the real events that happened in 1993.Brandon Teena was raped and murdered in Humboldt, Nebraska. She was 21 when she died. Nissen and Lotter (John and Tom in the film) were both involved in the murder. Teena had never commenced sex reassignment surgery (SRS), so she has sometimes been identified as LESBIAN by media reporters.

    

   

    

    

   

Heading West 2010

This is the film I watched in Tunghai's woman film festival in November 2011.The film is talking about ''SINGLE MOTHER'' issue and it’s directed by FEMALE DIRECTOR, which are the reason why it fits into the feminist film category!!The main character, Claire, had experienced sweetness and bitterness with her ex-husband, lover and her son.  

Claire had a fight with her ex-husband. He calls her a stupid cow because of buying a wrong peanut butter. Then he says that she is frigid, yet she actually did sleeps with Thomas afterwards. She was pushed to a table by her ex-husband. Claire has to endure his VERBAL VIOLENCE and PHYSICAL VIOLENCE. Also, she has to take care of her son, Milan, on her own. Her ex-husband starts new life with Angela and she is going to have a baby. This makes Claire feel extremely sad because she did not get along with her lover and she had an abortion, which means Milan will not have a brother whom he wants to play soccer with. When she heard Milan regard Angela’s unborn baby as his sister, Claire feels devastated and desperately regretted having painful abortion. Her ex-husband is an irresponsible man who thinks everything is Claire’s faults. He even doesn’t know how to communicate with Claire or deal with problems peacefully. All he knows is to scold and hit her without listening to her reason. He is just having an easy life with Angela and only has to give Claire living expenses; he of course would not know how tiring it is to bring up Milan.

Thomas locks his bike with Claires’ and this is how they meet each other. Thomas prepares breakfast with Milan and sets a back seat for him on his bicycle. However, later he is late for Claire’s party and keeps flirting with her friend. When Claire wants him to stay, he rejects and said" I’m not falling in love with you and do not expect me to do anything. " Previously, how nice he is to cook for them and to say he wants a child with Claire. These are all illusions. When Claire wants to know exactly what their relationship is, Thomas simply blames her for nagging again. Obviously, he does not want to marry Claire and he only wants to have sex with her. He keeps coming and going and this makes Claire hard to forget him. On February third, he visits her again and he wants to be with her and Milan. He even shows his jealousy because Claire had a dinner with another man.If he really loves Claire, he would not want her to have an abortion. He does not care how hurt Claire is, both mentally and physically. Claire really wants a family with Thomas, but he is a libertine and has no responsibility at all. His lame excuses for not loving Claire are that he does not open his heart and it is a chaos in his head.

Milan is Claire’s sweet responsibilities. He saw her mother being pushed to a table by his father and he also saw her mother having sex with Thomas. However, he still gets along with both of them. He is looking forward to playing with the unborn sister. He has a good time cooking with Thomas. Milan seems to be unaffected by adults’ complicated world. Despite of the fact that he breaks into Claires’ room when she is making love with Thomas, she lets him in and sleeps beside her instead of kicking him out of the door. This demonstrates how much Claire loves Milan. The last scene is Claire riding a bike with Milan on the back. Her life goes on and she needs to move on and be strong for her son.

I think Claire is a woman who knows clearly what she wants and is resolute. She wants to start a new life with Thomas, but she later realizes that she should make a final decision, that is, never see Thomas any more. She also shows her resolute by throwing Thomas’ stuffs away. Thomas is uncertain of what he is doing and cannot give any promises. He only knows he gets along with her and he does not even regard her as a girlfriend. Even though Clarie met two men who are not good at communicating with her and hate explaining or listening to what she said, she uses wisdom to find the way out of suffering. They just want to dominate her and ask her to deal with all the troubles. In the epilogue, she opens the window and hears the noise. At the same time, she lets the fresh air in and it represents a new life. The family she overlooks gives her strength to keep moving on in despite of trauma and hot and cold relationships. Her painful feelings are released. As she closes the window, everything is silent and she comes back to reality again-lonely but not alone. I admire her, being a single mother, overcomes ebb and flow of life and being so courageous to never submit to men!

What a Girl Wants(2003)

This is the movie directed by Dennie Gordon.The main character is played by Amanda Bynes and she is one of my favorite actress!!!The movie begins with a American girl,Daphne,who is raised by her mother,Libby.Her mother is both an artist and wedding singer and Daphne herself is a waitress on the wedding.On Daphne's seventeenth birthday,Libby tells her about her absentee father.

After hearing that,she is curious about what her father looks like and why he left her and Libby.Then she told her mon that she wants to go to London and visits her father,who is an influential aristocratic politician,Lord  Henry Dashwood.

Libby agrees to let her go find her dad in London.When she arrives at London,she is busying looking for the place where her father lives.

 Before sneaking in her father's estate,she meets a cute musician,Ian,who is a singer in the band.She tells him that she is in search for a wealthy politician,that is, her father.

Finally,she finds the address and sneaks into the beautiful palace.Yet she is caught immediately by her dad,Henry.

Henry is so surprised that Daphne is her daughter because Libby left him without saying that she was pregnant.He doesn't know he has a daughter existing in the world until Daphne comes to London.Soon she lives in the her dad's palace and she is stunned by the large,fantastic and luxurious room.And that is her room!!!

Her dad asks her to attend royal dress show and she is so glad that she has a chance to go there with her father.Henry has a fiancée, Glynnis and her daughter,Clarissa.They don't like Daphne because they are afraid that she will threaten Henry's political career and her existence may be a scandal for Henry.This is likely to destroy his reputation and election.Clarissa asks Daphne to choose clothing she like to the royal dress show in order to see her making fun of herself.

Nevertheless,instead of wearing what Clarissa had suggested for her,she wears clothing that she sees fit.She unintetionally walks on the stage and turns out to be a professional model that every audience fixs their eyes on her.

She is an ordinary girl that suddenly walks into the life of an upper class and breaks the rules of what a noble girl should act like.She often does what she wants in front of other people and this in turn causes her father to be laughed by citizens and he might be unable to be elected as a member of Parliament. Consequently,she starts to learn to act like a lady.

Because of learning to be an elegant girl,she has no free time to see Ian,who becomes her boyfriend.The worst thing happened on her coming-out party,  Clarissa and her mother play a trick on her by locking her in the room.Her party is ruined  totally.Her mother also attends her coming-out party.Unfortunately,she left London with her mother at last due to unhappiness brought by vicious Clarissa and her mother.

Daphne and her mom goes back to US and did not contact Henry anymore.Unexpectedly,Henry goes to US and wants to remarry Libby.Ian also goes to US in order to be with her girlfriend,Daphne.Daphne is so surprised and glad that she has a father again and a boyfriend who love her so much.Later,they all go back to London and lead a happy life!!! 
I think Daphne is a lucky girl who gets what she wants eventually!!Everyone all has dreams and we all want our dreams to come true,yet we have to make an effort to achieve those desired dreams.What I want to say is that no matter how hard how desperate your situation is,never give up and keep going on.There is always somthing,someone waiting in some place for you.If you surrender to difficulties,how could you possible to see the bright future and meet the right person that you will fall in love with?Thus,working hard on your dream and you will certainly see the results without regret!!You will just as lucky as Daphne who gets what she wants-Dad,Boyfriend and a happy family!!!

The Virgin Suicide (1999)

The Virgin Suicide is directed by Sofia Coppola.

There are five beautiful daughters (Therese, Mary,Bonnie,Lux and Cecilia)

 in Lisbon’s family.

But…behind the silent surface…those five girls killed themselves unexpectedly.

1.      The youngest girl, Cecilia, killed herself by jumping out of her bedroom window and impaling herself on an iron fence.

2.      The other four girls killed themselves in the end. Therese took sleeping pills. Mary put her head into the oven. Bonnie hanged herself. Lux burn herself in the car.

Why did they commit suicide?

Their mother said: none of my daughters lack any love, there’s plenty of love in our house. I never understand why.

The film did not give us the answer why they commit suicide, yet I figure these all about the way their parents treat them.

1.      When Cecilia died, the father tried to cover up the reason why she committed suicide. He told his four daughters that Cecilia’s death was only an accident. He never wanted to discuss the real problem in the house.

2.      The parents allowed them to join the homecoming party with boys.Mrs.Lisbon took them to buy dresses. The dresses are all white. What does it symbolizes? White means purity and innocent. This is very irony. Those girls are all blonde. They looked so innocent with the white dresses that the boys cannot help but fall in love with them. Unfortunately, Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon do not allow their daughters to have relationships with boys!!

3.      The Lisbon sisters have very strict curfew. One time, after the party, Lux did not come back on time because she was having sex with Trip, who is the most handsome boy in school.Later,they all are grounded by their parents.Mrs.Lisbon even forced Lux to burn all her favorite CDs for punishment!!The worse is that they cannot go to school or contact with other people anymore!!!!

I think Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon do love their daughters, but they are too overprotecting them. Their love somehow is too much that suffocate their daughters!!The Lisbon sisters can only live in their own world .They don’t have any social skill since their parents block their connection with outside world. When the sisters breaks family rules, their parents did not want their explanations. They think that were ecuses.There is certainly a big gap between Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon and their five daughters. When the sisters no longer put up with that, they find the way out by committing suicide.

Do you think Mr. and Mrs. Lisbon love their daughters in a proper way? Do you think your parents

are very strict?   

Frida(2002)

This is a film directed by Julie Taymor.The story is about a Mexican painter,Frida's whole life.She has two important incidents in her life,as she put it,one is her car accident and the other,Diego,who is the worst man ever.Frida has a serious car accident when she was young.She lies on the bed for a long time and the worst thing is that she can't even walk again.The day she lies on the bed,she starts paining self-portrait,her parents,sisters and relatives.Later,she even manages to walk again.Then she goes to find a great painter,Diego at that time in order to ask his opinion of her paintings.Diego thinks that her paintings are special and she should continue to paint.They become comrade,colleague and friend forever.Frida goes to his studio and they make love.(They actually love each other)

Then they get marry.Frida's mother doesn't really like Diego because she thinks he will bring Frida trouble in the future.And the main reason is that he has married twice and divorced twice.She says that they are just like dove marries to the elephant!!

After they marry,Diego tells Frida in the morning that he lets his ex-wife live with them until she finds a place to live.Frida is so angry that she has a fight with his ex-wife.But later,they become friends and Diego's ex-wife tells her that he never belongs to anyone.He belongs to himself.
Diego and Frida then go to New York together because he is offered a job there,which has something to do with paintings.Frida has to put up with Diego's affairs with lots of women.She tells other women that she is used to those affairs.Later,she gets pregnant,but she had a miscarriage and will never be pregnant again.She's so desperate that she paints a picture that describes her feeling of losing a baby.Diego burst out crying when he saw the painting.

She goes back to her parents' home because her mom is seriously ill.She notices the bruises around her sister,Christina's eyes.Christina told her that she left her husband.Later,Frida's mom died and she goes to her funeral.

 Diego is a communist .Heonce paints Lenin on the wall,but the manager asks him to repaint.He refuses to give up his principle,so he loses this job.At the same time,Frida asks her sister(Christina)to come over helping cleaning up Diego's studio. Frida takes Chrifinding thatstina's children out to amusement park,however;she came back finding that Diego fucks her sister.Now,she's totally giving him up.She shouts out to Diego that YOU'RE JUST AN ANIMAL!!Feeling so down,she left Diego and cut her hair short.She indulges in drinking and smoking in order to ease the pain.

Later,Diego asks her for helping his friend,Trotsky(a philosophy).He wants Frida to let Trotsky stay in Frida's old house for a while.She agrees and is then having an affair with Trotsky.However,Trotsky's wife notices that and asks to leave Frida's old house with Trotsky earlier before it's too late.

Frida had a fight with Diego since her affair with Trotsky.She then goes to Paris and she writes letters to Diego very often to show him that she adores him still!!When she comes back and meets Diego again,he tells her that he wants to go to California and he wants a divorce.Though Frida is sad,she lets him go.Later,her toes are cut because the doctor afraids that the disease will affect to her whole legs.Just as she feels that her life is a misery,Diego comes back to her and asks her to remarry to him!!And her reply is:YES!!

In the last scene,she is so sick that she has to lie on the bed all the time.That day is her own exhibition,but the doctor warns that if she goes,her tracheitis will turn into pneumonia.Therefore,Diego goes to her exhibition and explains her works for her.Surprisingly,Frida manages to come to the exhibition by having people moving her bed with herself lying on the bed.The film ends with a painting depicts that Frida sleeps silently on her bed and suddenly the fire burns them all into ash!!

I believe that she is a special painter.She 's honest and courageous to her miserable life even though she has a serious car accident.I like her strong will and her paintings because what she had painted is something inside,not outside.She expresses her strength ,sorrow and experience in her paintings.We should learn from her and never give up hope when what you 've encountered is just something trivial!!Cherish life and always look on the bright side:D

The Piano(1993)

This is a film written and directed by Jane Campion.The story begins with a woman called''Ada'' who hasn't spoken since she was six.She lost her husband by accident and then her father arranges her to remarry to Alistair who is a pioneer in Newzealand .She then goes there by boat with her daughter,Flora along with their belongings and piano,which is the most important thing in her life.Alistair takes a crew and his friend Baines to help them carry all the things home.Unfortunately,Alistair refuses to carry the piano because they don't have people to move such a heavy Piano.Even though Ada uses sign language to tell her daughter that she can't leave the piano here,Alistair insists that the piano remains right here on the beach.

Later,she goes to Baines house with Flora and asks him to take them to the beach.At first,he says''I can't do that.''He still takes them there in the end.Ada plays her piano and Flora dances on the beach.They both enjoy the happy moment there.However,Baines makes a deal with Alistair.He wants to exchange some lands he owns for the Ada's piano.He also requests for a piano lesson from Ada.Alistair agrees and tells Ada that she has to teach Baines piano.She is so furious,but she has no choice.She then asks Baines what he wants to learn,but he replies that he simply just wants to hear her playing the piano.Whenever she plays the piano,he is just lying on the bed watching and doing nothing.

Then Baines offers Ada a way that she can get her piano back,which is to do things he saks,he wants.He tells her''one key at a time'' and she can take her piano back.What Baines wants is to touch her,kiss her and he even asks her to lift her skirt up higher in order to see what's inside.Ada feels reluctant but she did what he told her to.

One day.Baine saw Alistair and Ada holding hands watching Flora's performance.He is very upset and leaves early.Ada is quite happy about that because she intends that Baines should keep away from her.
The Next day,Baines tells Ada that the piano lesson is over and he gives the piano back to her.He then says that he wants Ada to care for him,but she didn't.He feels like he is a whoremaster.Her husband then stops the worker from carrying the piano bake home.He wants to know what happened indeed and he rushs into Baines'.He just told him that he's giving back piano to her and Alistair doesn't have to return the lands to him.Alistair feels relieved,of course!!

The wired thing is that when the piano is back,Ada doesn't play that much.Her husband doesn't understand why.One day,she walks to Baines house.Baines is surprised and says''what wind brings you here'' jolkingly?He shouts out loud''if you come with no feelings,then GET OUT''!!Ada then slaps him across the face.She came here because she loves him.They kiss each other and make love after a fight.Just as they are enjoying their time,Alistair happens to see them making love throuh the gap of the wall.He heard Baines saying that if Ada loves him,she should come again tomorrow.Alistair stops Ada from going to Baines' the next day.

Her husband is so angry that he decides to lock Ada in her room and she is not allowed to go to Baines' anymore.After that,she acts like she is losing herself.She plays the piano with her eyes closed at midnight.She goes to her husband's room and touches his body.When he touches her,she suddenly pulls away.Later,Alistair decides to take off all the lodges on the door and windows.He tells Ada that he trusts her and he believes that she won't go to see Baines.

She then take one of the keys out of the piano and she inscribes some words on it:Dear Geroge,(Baines)You have my heart,Ada Mc Grath.''She asks her daughter help her deliever to Baines,but unfortunately she gives it to Alistair whom she regards as father.Alistair is losing his temper and he rushs home.He takes an ax AND CHOPS Ada's index finger off.He warns that if she goes to see Baines again,he will chop off her finger each time she visits him.(This is the most sad scene that I have ever seen.He 's definiely a beast.how can he be so cruel?He says that he's only chopping her wings off,but nooo.He's chopping off her life!!She expresses her feelings and words through playing the piano and this has already been part of her daily life.I'm crying when he cuts her finger off.Love is inevitable and if someone you adore doesn't love you,you should let him/her go.Set others free and also set yourself free because you can still find the right person in this world.Hurting someone you love or killing yourself is just narrow-minded!!This is what I've learned from this film.)

Alistair runs to Baines' house at midnight and points a gun on Baines' head.He told Baines that he heard Ada saying some words from her head not mouth.She said:I have to go,let me go.Let Baines help me go.Therefore,Alistair angrily shouts out that he wants Ada to go and Baines as well.He wants to wake up in the moring and feels everything is just a dream.

The following day,Ada,Flora and Baines are on the boat with their belongings and the piano in the middle .However,Ada says that she wants to pull the piano over the boat.She then ties her feet with the loop of the rope which is connected to the piano.When the piano is pulled over the boat,she herself is also dragged down to the water.HER WILL CHOOSE A LIFE.She tries to get the rope off.What a death!What a chance!What a hope!!

Later,Ada and Baines have a happy life together.He makes a metal finger and gives that to Ada so that she can play the piano again!!In the meantime,she's learning speaking.At night,she thinks of her piano that's silent in the deep sea.
Though she is silent and quiet,she expresses her modes by playing the piano.It's like her happiness,sorrow and anger all added into the music that she plays.I thing being quiet and silent is not that bad at all because people with these kind of characters can sense every details in life and they are truly an artist in themselves!!They're probably not talktive whilst they are a good listener!!
